The “Matildas Effect” : on work, leadership and team.

You’ve been hearing about the “Ted Lasso Effect” on work and leadership: showing genuine curiosity and empathy for others, mixed in with humility and the ability to bake yummy shortbread for your boss.

What have you learnt so far from the Matildas Football team during their FIFA Women’s World Cup participation?

I chatted with legends Michael Rowland and Madeleine Morris on Friday on ABC TV News Breakfast, looking at the headlines around Sam Kerr’s potential return to the field for the next match v Denmark on Monday: Newspaper headlines like this – “Kerr’s calf a chance” (ha!)

Some things learnt from the Matildas that you could apply to your work:
– How are you managing key person risk/ dependency? What Sam’s injury revealed in the last match against Canada, is the incredible depth of the team and the teamwork and support that the team have for each other.
– Strategic “Clarity with Flexibility”: good to have a plan, but how ready are you to pivot if something doesn’t go your way. 20 years ago, at the Australian TV and Radio School, I learnt the mantra “Prepare to be Spontaneous”. So, do your prep, but when it is match day (going on air) – you need to hold it all lightly, listen with your whole being, and go with the flow.
– Relationships are the critical component. You are working with humans – and humans do need to “Believe”. How are you creating that belief with your team?

What are your reflections???
