Families Tasmania, then known as the Child Welfare Association, was set up in 1917 to address the high infant mortality rate. It achieved its aim by setting up child health clinics and establishing a sterilised milk supply for babies.
More than 100 years, and two name changes later, the board of the not-for-profit have chosen to close the doors, and place it into administration. Staff and volunteers insist Families Tasmania was in a good financial position, and they’re blindsided by the decision.
