Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) defended Donald Trump after he said immigrants were “poisoning the blood of this country” in New Hampshire over the weekend.
Democrats were quick to condemn Trump, with the White House comparing his caustic remarks to those of Adolf Hitler. Republicans, on the other hand, have largely avoided condemning the former president— no lawmakers called for Trump to walk the comments back or apologize.
Malliotakis downplayed Trump’s continued use of authoritarian language in an interview with CNN on Monday.
“I just think he is trying to bring attention to the issue,” Malliotakis said.
