
Queensland’s outgoing fire chief mistakenly provided incorrect and inflated numbers for the operations his department undertook to reduce bushfire risk this season.
During a September 19 briefing, Commissioner Greg Leach reassured the public that his department had overseen more than 530 “hazard reduction burns” so far this year.
But an ABC investigation confirmed that this figure was inflated — due to human error — by including activities like slashing a firebreak, or a community education visit, as actual burns.
