Discovering the Voice Behind OpenAI’s ‘Sky’

Unusual revelations have emerged this week as experts from Arizona State University find distinct vocal similarities between Scarlett Johansson and OpenAI’s ‘Sky’, a record-breaking, AI-generated voice. These claims were initially commissioned by National Public Radio (NPR) and revealed uncanny resemblances after the assessment of 600 actresses.

The analysis showed that Johansson’s voice appears more similar to Sky than 98% of the other actress’s voices. Interestingly, the voices of Anne Hathaway and Keri Russell were also discovered to closely resemble Sky’s. While Professor Visar Berisha, leader of the analysis team, considers Johansson’s voice to be “similar, but likely not identical” another evident comparison was between the lengths of Johansson’s and Sky’s vocal tracts.

Meanwhile, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman and CTO Mira Murati have dismissed the suggestion that Sky was designed to mirror Johansson’s voice. Following recent talks between OpenAI and Johansson, she expressed that she was approached to contribute her voice to the AI model, an offer that she rejected.
