On June 1, 1980, the Cable News Network (CNN) launched at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Ted Turner introduced the groundbreaking channel, with David Walker and Lois Hart, a husband-and-wife team, anchoring the first newscast. CNN, envisioned as the first 24-hour news network, marked a new era in television journalism. Burt Reinhardt, the executive vice president of CNN, was instrumental in the launch, hiring most of the channel’s initial 200 employees, including the first news anchor, Bernard Shaw. This ambitious project transformed news consumption, offering continuous coverage and setting the stage for future news networks. CNN’s debut represented a significant shift in how news was delivered and consumed, paving the way for round-the-clock reporting.
