ABC NewsRadio Interview 9 Jan 2024

This morning I was interviewed on ABC NewsRadio regarding 2023’s terrible and tragic death and injury on Australia’s roads and highways. With 1,251 people killed and more than 40,000 suffering serious injury last year, we discuss what our governments and communities should be doing to help get everyone home safe.

This is all the more important given the current Commonwealth, State and Territories National Road Safety Strategy commitment to reduce lives lost to less than 570 by 2030, which means that if we were tracking to meet this target, no more than 965 people should have been killed last year. As a nation we have not only made no progress, we are going in the wrong direction, and as a result, far too many individuals, families, friends and communities are forever affected by avoidable road trauma.

During the interview we touched on the need to build and maintain our roads to three star or better, to reduce speed limits to immediately increase a road’s star rating, expanding the use of average speed cameras, as well as expanding the use of mobile phone detection camera systems to include seat belt and speeding detection, the stupidity of putting signage in front of covert speed camera vehicles, and of course, I noted our thanks to the AAA for its advocacy for comparative injury data to be provided from the states and territories as a part of receiving their Commonwealth road funding…

And the reason why this is so important to SARAH…
