The US has rejected suggestions a surface-to-air missile brought down a private jet, presumed to have been carrying Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin. Pentagon officials said it was “likely” the mercenary leader was on board, amid speculation he could have been on another one of his planes, which was in transit at the time of the crash.
In a televised address President Putin offered his condolences to the families of those who died and described the Wagner chief as a talented person who made serious mistakes. He did not directly confirm whether Prigozhin was killed, but did refer to him in the past tense. Ukraine has denied any involvement.
