
Syrians have expressed outrage at their president’s return to the Arab League on Friday, after a 12-year absence sparked by the country’s civil war.
Human rights groups have accused Bashar al-Assad’s regime of committing war crimes, including torture, use of chemical weapons and indiscriminate bombing of its own civilians since the conflict erupted in 2011.
Dara Conduit is a Middle East analyst and lecturer in political science at the University of Melbourne.
