A LOSING BATTLE FOR VIEWERS AT THE DAWN OF THE ERA OF 24-HOUR CABLE NEWS IN THE WORLD AS WE’VE KNOWN IT – October 27, 1983…The local newspaper reported the end of it all this way:
“The year was 1982 and along the Stamford oceanfront complaints were springing up about the tall building on Harbor Drive that glowed brightly through the night. The tenant, the broadcasting arm of Westinghouse, known as Group W, was launching its all-news cable network, Satellite News Channel.
‘We were operating 24 hours a day, and we were lit up like a Christmas tree,” a senior executive at Group W, Lloyd A. Werner, recalled. ”We had to hire off-duty cops to shut the blinds at night. People were protesting outside waving placards.”
The Satellite News Channel went dark for good the following year, vanquished by arch-rival the Cable News Network. Cable television has since become one of the nation’s major growth industries with hundreds of channels either already launched or in the process of doing so.
Mr. Werner, (who went on to become the) vice president of sales and marketing at CBS Cable…still believes if Satellite News Channel had held on a little longer it would have outlasted CNN and Ted Turner. ”Stamford would have been what Atlanta is today,” he said.”
If it had hung on, who knows what might have been? Who knows what the television news landscape might look like today? Who knows? All I know is SNC was my first full-time job right out of college and for 16 months the Satellite News Channel was a great ride and it provided invaluable learning experience. It was the best of times in the television news business and when it was over this is how we said goodbye…
