Watch with The Washington Post as former president Donald Trump is arraigned in Washington, D.C., on charges that he conspired to subvert the results of the 2020 presidential election. A grand jury has indicted Trump on four counts, including conspiracy to defraud the nation. Trump is the first former U.S. president to face federal criminal charges and to be three-times indicted. He has denied any wrongdoing.
Special counsel Jack Smith is leading the Justice Department investigation, examining alleged efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn Joe Biden’s win in the 2020 presidential election, including the events that led to the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. Smith is also leading a separate investigation into Trump’s possession of classified documents after leaving office and his alleged attempts to obstruct government efforts to retrieve them. Trump and his aide, Waltine “Walt” Nauta, were charged in a now 40-count indictment in that case and have pleaded not guilty.
Trump’s three indictments have all come in just over four months; he was first indicted in New York in March on state allegations of falsifying business documents related to hush money payments. Trump has pleaded not guilty in all cases. Meanwhile, a grand jury in Georgia is weighing whether to charge Trump for his alleged efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state. That decision could be handed down within weeks.
Legal experts say Trump, who is the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, can legally campaign with pending indictments and even if he is convicted.
