Two steps forward, two steps back 🧲 – Solving the Sunday New York Times Crossword – 6-25-23

The title of this one says it all, though I didn’t figure it all out until a few themers in. It’s a good one – many of the entries took a while to sink in but totally made sense once I got it. Some humorous wordplay, some interesting trivia, and only a little bit of crosswordese.
