Australians are heading to the ballot box to cast their vote in a historic referendum that could shape the country for generations to come.

Today all Australians will have to decide if they support changing the constitution to “recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice”

Leaders on the ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ sides of the campaign have made their final impassioned pleas to voters.

0:27 Liberal Senator Michaelia Cash called the Voice ‘risky’ and said it would divide Australians. 0:48 Prime Minister Anthony Albanese argued it was the ‘No’ campaign stoking division, and cited a failure of Closing the Gap targets as one example of the need for change.

01:30 Reporter Alex Brewster spoke to voters in Brisbane to hear the reasons behind their votes.
