Cyclone Alfred crossed over the Moreton Bay islands, off Brisbane, early Saturday morning and was downgraded to a tropical low about 6am Saturday, but it still packed a punch.
Trees are down, about 250,000 are without power and areas are flooded.
The system is expected to move inland over the next 12 to 24 hours, bringing heavy rainfall which could lead to life-threatening flooding.
